—  About

Charles A. Kennedy Jr. is an ASC Vision Mentee and award-winning cinematographer based in Detroit. He works nationally across narrative, documentary, and branded content, specializing in naturalistic lighting and honest visual storytelling.

Originally pursuing audio engineering, Charles discovered his passion for visual storytelling during his time at Lawrence Technological University. With few formal film courses available, he carved his own path by studying the craft independently, shooting relentlessly, and developing a visual language rooted in care, intention, and emotional clarity.

Known for his meticulous lighting, refined composition, and intentional approach to photographing people, Charles brings a grounded, human-centered sensibility to every frame. His work spans commercial, documentary, and narrative spaces, defined by an emphasis on honesty, stillness, and visual storytelling with heart.

His clients include: eBay, Google, Michigan State University, Compassion International, HAP Michigan, Plante Moran, and the Kresge Arts Foundation.

In 2023, Charles was selected for the American Society of Cinematographers Vision Mentorship Program, where he continues developing his craft under the mentorship of John Newby, ASC.

His most recent short film: Lunchbox, shot on the Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55, has earned festival recognition including the Audience Award at the NYU Sports Film Festival and a selection at the Wyoming International Film Festival, with an upcoming broadcast on SportsNet New York summer 2026.
