Charles A. Kennedy Jr. is an award-winning cinematographer and published photographer based in Metro Detroit.
Originally pursuing audio engineering, Charles discovered his passion for filmmaking during his sophomore year at Lawrence Technological University. With few formal film courses available, he immersed himself in self-guided learning—shooting constantly, studying his favorite cinematographers, and building his visual language from the ground up.
Known for his meticulous lighting, refined composition, and intentional approach to photographing Black skin, Charles brings care to every frame—whether in commercial, documentary, or narrative work.
His clients include eBay, Google, Michigan State University, Compassion International, HAP Michigan and the Kresge Art Foundation.
In 2023, Charles was selected for the American Society of Cinematographers Vision Mentorship Program, under the mentorship of John Newby, ASC.
